Classes of dangerous goods availabe for transportation

Transportation of dangerous goods is associated with risk of harm to human health, the environment and material assets. Transportation of dangerous goods requires compliance with all safety rules transportation, so in the process of ordering and shipping, you must specify hazard class (if available). According to the classification of the ADR dangerous goods are divided into 9 main classes.
  1. Explosives
Explosives are materials or items which have the ability to rapidly conflagrate or detonate as a consequence of chemical reaction. This class covers substances which can blast, fire-dangerous substances with explosive action, and also the devices containing explosives and blasting agents. Besides, this class includes substances and products which are dangerous thanks to their mass explosion hazard (capability of spreading the blast instantly on all freight), and also substances and products which tend to ‘scattering’.

To this class belong the substances and products characterized by their fire danger or insignificant danger of explosion and scattering, and also the substances that allocate considerable heat during combustion.

Division 1.1: Substances and articles which have a mass explosion hazard
Division 1.2: Substances and articles which have a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard
Division 1.3: Substances and articles which have a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both
Division 1.4: Substances and articles which present no significant hazard; only a small hazard in the event of ignition or initiation during transport with any effects largely confined to the package
Division 1.5: Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard
Division 1.6: Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard

  2. Gases
Pure gases, gas mixes, and also mixes of gases with liquid or rigid substances belong to this class. Gases can be nonflammable and flammable, chemically stable and unstable, toxic and nonpoisonous in any combination of these properties.

The main danger of gases directly depends on their pressure. The compressed and liquefied gases with a critical temperature about 20 °C, the cooled liquefied gases, gases dissolved under pressure or in solvent, and also aerosol sprays, and also any products containing gas under pressure can be very dangerous.

    Division 2.1: Non-flammable, non-toxic gases
    Division 2.2: Toxic gases
    Division 2.3: Flammable gases
Division 2.4: Flammable and toxic gases

Dangerous goods of the 2nd class, ADR-2
  3. Flammable Liquids
Liquids with the temperature of flash under 61°C, and a vapor pressure below 300 kPas at the temperature of 50°C belong to this class. Besides, they shouldn't be completely converted in gas at the temperature of 20 °C and normal pressure of 101,3 kPas.

To this class belong liquids and fusions with a temperature of flash above 61 °C, and also the solutions and suspensions of explosives in water or other liquids for the purpose of inhibition of their explosive properties. This class includes gasoil, diesel and light heating fuel, but also, flammable liquids which have significant toxic or corrosion properties.

Division 2.1: Flammable liquids which have a flash point at temperatures less then -18°C
Division 2.2: Flammable liquids which have a flash point at temperatures more then -18°C but less then +23°C
Division 2.3: Flammable liquids which have a flash point at temperatures more then +23°C but less then +61°C

Dangerous goods of the 3rd class, ADR-3
  4. Flammable Solids
This class unites substances that can be easily flared up by external sources of ignition. The fire can start as a result of friction, absorption of moisture, spontaneous chemical reactions, and also of heating. To this class belong pyrophoric substances, i.e., materials that ignite at contact with air even in small quantities.

The 4th class includes substances which emit the flammable gases at interaction with water. These gases are capable to form explosive mixes with air, and also the products containing such substances. It must be kept in mind that besides the flame the toxic products of burning can be dangerous too.

Division 4.1: Flammable and self-decomposing solids
Division 4.2: Substances liable to spontaneous combustion
Division 4.3: Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases

Dangerous goods of the 4th class, ADR-4
  5. Oxidizing Agents and Organic Peroxides
This kind of substances has a capability to emit easily oxygen to sustain combustion. In certain cases the materials of this kind can also cause spontaneous ignition and explosion. However they are not always combustible itself.

Peroxides are the organic substances inclined to exothermic decomposition at the normal or elevated temperature. Such decomposition can lead to formation of harmful or flammable gases or vapors. Decomposition can begin under the influence of heat, because of the contacts with impurity, by means of friction or blow. Its speed increases with temperature rise and depends on composition of organic peroxide.

Division 5.1: Oxidizing agents, flammable substances which may cause or contribute to combustion, generally by yielding oxygen.
Division 5.2: Organic peroxides, either in liquid or solid form. Self-decomposing substances which may cause or contribute to combustion. Decomposition can begin under the influence of heat, because of the contacts with impurity, by means of friction or blow.

Dangerous goods of the 5th class, ADR-5
  6. Toxic and Infectious Substances
Toxic agents hitting inside the human bodies or contacting with our skin or a mucous membrane are liable to cause death, poisoning or a disease.

Toxic agents are subdivided on high toxic, toxic and slightly toxic by the level of their influence. Substances that contain pathogenic organisms, bacteria, viruses, rikketsiya, parasites and the fungi are named the infectious substances. These substances are causative agents of infectious diseases of animals and people.

Infectious substances are subdivided into groups of danger depending on their pathogenic properties and level of risk.

Division 6.1: Toxic agents with lethal inhalation concentration up to 10 mg/dm3 in open air, capable to cause death for 50% of human population in the infection zone
Division 6.1: Infectious substances containing pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, etc.).

Dangerous goods of the 6th class, ADR-6
  7. Radioactive Substances
Any substance containing radionuclides belongs to this class. The main danger of these materials is the emission of alpha, beta or gamma radiation.

Radioactive materials can be self-igniting or can initiate fire, besides, they can start corrosion or release thermal energy.

Radiation is dangerous thanks to formation of burns, violations of immune system, change of blood composition, a hair loss, cancer diseases, leukemia, genetic disorders and death. Safety of delivery of radioactive substances can be reached only by careful observance of all requirements imposed to their transportation.

Division 7.0: Radioactive substances transported only under certain conditions (with raised degree of danger)
    Division 7.1: Fissioning radioactive materials
Division 7.2: Radioactive substances with low specific activity (radioactive ores and concentrates) transported only under certain conditions
Division 7.3: Radioactive substances with low specific activity
Division 7.4: Pyrophoric radioactive substances (spontaneously flammable if shredded)
    Division 7.5: Oxidizing radioactive substances
    Division 7.6: Surface contaminated objects
    Division 7.7: Radioactive isotopes
    Division 7.8: Corrosive radioactive substances

Dangerous goods of the 7th class, ADR-7
This class of cargo are not transported by the Mohill company
  8. Corrosive substances
This class unites substances and products that can dissolve organic tissue or severely corrode certain metals. Chemical properties of these materials have negative impact at contact with skin and a mucous membrane. In case of leak or a pouring they can cause damage or destruction of other goods or vehicles.

The 8th class also covers substances that can form corrosion liquid at connection with water or at natural air humidity can form corrosion couples or suspensions.

Depending on the level of danger all these substances are subdivided on high corrosive, corrosive and slightly corrosive. Acids and alkalis belong to the most dangerous.

Division 8.1: Acids (sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc)
Division 8.2: Alkalis (potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, etc)
Division 8.2: Miscellaneous (iodine, mercury, etc)

Dangerous goods of the 8th class, ADR-8
  9. Miscellaneous

The 9th class includes all other dangerous substances and products. For example fine dust of the substance at inhalation may cause health hazard. This class unites substances and devices which in case of fire can emit dioxine, the substances emitting the flammable vapors, lithium batteries, saving means, substances dangerous to environment, genetically changed products, and also the other substances that are dangerous but are not covered by other classes.
